Fourteen lines hath an English sonnet – such
As those which Shakespeare famously did write.
Fourteen iambic lines may not be much,
But they speak all, from sorrow to delight.
Look closely at each sonnet Shakespeare penned:
First come three quatrains of alternate rhyme,
And then we have a couplet at the end.
The Bard observed this format every time.
A Wordsworth sonnet, on the other hand,
Rhymes differently. But one thing should be clear:
All sonnet writers love the sonnet, and
Proclaim its greatness for the world to hear!
“Scorn not the sonnet!” was what Wordsworth wrote.
It’s something I too would like to promote!

On Friday 12 December 2008, I composed the following English sonnet – iambic pentameter and all.

The frost lay on the landscape, brought about
By last night’s typical December freeze.
Wrapped up from head to toe, I sauntered out
In temperatures of just a few degrees
And trod the hoary carpet on the ground –
When, suddenly, I froze to see a scene
Of sheer unearthly beauty all around:
Frost-decorated grass in white and green,
Like crystal icing, gleaming in the light
Shed by the morning on the placid earth.
I was enchanted, spellbound by the sight,
For one brief glimpse of which it had been worth
A break from that computer on my desk –
So cold, so frosty, and so picturesque!

Simon Armitage: “Witty and profound” writer to be next Poet Laureate

Poet Simon Armitage, whose “witty and profound” work spans sharp observations about modern life and classical myths, is to be the UK’s next Poet Laureate.

The West Yorkshire writer will hold the historic post for the next decade, taking over from Dame Carol Ann Duffy.

Over recent decades, the role has moved away from mainly chronicling royal occasions to promoting poetry and capturing a wider view of British life.

Can light be photons – particles with size?
And can electrons sometimes act like waves?
The quantum world may be one big surprise –
But that’s how subatomic stuff behaves.
While Pauli, Bohr and Heisenberg might wonder
If Schrödinger’s cat is alive or dead,
The physics of large objects, though, comes under
    General relativity instead.
And as the likes of Stephen Hawking bring
More hidden Nature’s laws out of the dark,
Is there a law that governs everything –
From massive black holes to the tiniest quark?
How might GR be merged with QED?
The search goes on for such a GUT.

Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony № 3 in A minor, Op. 56 (the Orchestra della Svizzera Italiana conducted by Jérémie Rhorer) in “Through the Night” with Jonathan Swain on BBC Radio 3.

          A stately introduction well precedes
          The agitated main allegro part;
It bursts with fitful vigour, but recedes
Exhausted to the tempo at the start.
Amid the quiet strings, a clarinet
          Then sings a lively tune with lyric zest;
A nicer movement you can never get:
I like the short F-major movement best!
The slow third movement, bursting with despair,
          Is followed in A minor by the last;
          Intense pulsating rhythms everywhere
Just make the music roll on nice and fast.
At last, the “Scottish” in a glorious way
Ends in the tonic major key of A!

And now Andrea Leadsom has deserted her!
    Theresa May obdurately stays on,
Despite worse things still (and soon) to occur,
Heedless of how bad things for her have gone.
That snap election was her first mistake:
    Her dreamt-of landmark landslide never came;
A DUP deal was the make-or-break
That saved her party from disastrous shame.
Out of the frying pan, straight in the fire …
The Tory ship has never sunk so low,
Being dragged by her through the Brexit mire:
The EU polls must tell her: “Time to go!”
Go, Mrs May, while you still have your head!
Let Boris Johnson fill your shoes instead.

UK set for new PM as Theresa May quits

Theresa May has said she will quit as Conservative leader on 7 June, paving the way for a contest to decide a new prime minister.

Mrs May said she would continue to serve as PM while a Conservative leadership contest takes place.

Boris Johnson, Esther McVey and Rory Stewart have said they intend to run for the party leadership, while more than a dozen others are believed to be seriously considering entering the contest.

Looks like Boris Johnson may indeed be the new PM. With him in office, Britain will be out of the EU in no time – deal or no deal.

I have just read about WHEN THE GIANT MAMMALS WERE ALIVE in the chapter “When Life began” of Dean’s Tell Me the Answer. These creatures started flourishing at the time the dinosaurs were about to go into extinction, I gather.

The Mesozoic era was in want
Of new, exciting life to fill the Earth.
The late Triassic saw the thecodont
Then give the awesome dinosaurs their birth.
There were saurischians, with their lizard’s waist,
And there were bird-hipped ornithischians, too.
The kind of life these fearsome lizards faced
Was such that soon the world became their zoo.
The grand Jurassic period was their time.
They grew and thrived in this their golden age.
But then they sadly overshot their prime.
The era reached the harsh Cretaceous stage.
And after that, before you could have blinked,
These so mysterious beasts became extinct!

Maybe I haven’t learnt all of the things
I’ve come here to learn. But, from what I’ve faced,
I’ve learnt some things. The lessons that they bring
Mean this life of mine hasn’t been a waste.
I’ve made mistakes – time to leave them behind.
You can’t expect me to pass every test.
And if “I’ve had enough” is on my mind,
Please, please bear in mind that I’ve done my best!
Can’t do more, sorry – I’m not Superman.
I must come back to make good any fail.
In any case, what’s one short life time’s span
Next to eternity’s immense time scale?
So why hold it against me if I’ve missed
One trick in one insuperably long list?
