In the novel Barnaby Rudge, the eponymous character has a talking pet raven called Grip.

Set during the Gordon Riots (1780), Barnaby Rudge is one of two historical novels of Dickens, the other being A Tale of Two Cities, set during the French Revolution (1789–99).

In the novel David Copperfield, the character Wilkins Micawber has an ingenious recipe for securing happiness and avoiding misery: if one spends in a year 100.125% of one’s annual income, one will be miserable, whereas if one spends in a year 99.875% of one’s annual income, one will be happy. (Six old pence is 0.125% (one eight-hundredth) of twenty pounds.)

Micawber’s wife’s name is Emma. Two other Dickens characters with that Christian name are Emma Haredale in Barnaby Rudge and Emma Peecher in Our Mutual Friend.
