    NASA delays mission to unlock Sun’s mysteries

    The Parker Solar Probe was set to launch from Cape Canaveral, Florida on Saturday, but last-minute investigations have delayed it for 24 hours.

    The probe aims to dip directly into our star’s outer atmosphere, or corona.

    The Sun is constantly bombarding the Earth with charged particles and magnetic fields. This perpetual flow, or “solar wind”, is responsible for generating the beautiful auroral lights that appear in polar skies, but there are some interactions that initiate much more troubling effects.

    The Sun is a G-type star lying in the main sequence on the Hertzsprung–Russell diagram. On Thursday 20 March 1997, I composed a poem about the Solar System (one of a series I called my “general-knowledge sonnets”).


    The small Mercurial orbit takes it round
    The Sun in eighty-eight terrestrial days.
    Then further outwards from the Sun are found
    The other planets in their separate ways.
    Just after Venus, planet Earth avoids
    Conditions in which carbon life will die.
    Next, after Mars and all the asteroids,
    Comes this Red-spotted planet in the sky.
    By Jove, it is the most gigantic! So
    Are Saturn and Uranus; Neptune, too,
    Is one of these gas giants. Pluto, though,
    Is far too small – the smallest, to be true.
      For all of these, the Sun provides the force
      To make them move around and run their course.

    Note that Pluto (now designated as a dwarf planet) was considered a planet at the time of writing.

    On the other hand, the cast of Riverdance need no external force to perform the opening dance sequence “Reel Around The Sun”. “The sun brings light and fire,” quoth the official site, referring to the phenomenon as “benevolent masculine power”. “The sun is the light of morning, exuberant and clear.”

    Without the Sun, life on Earth would be impossible. It is therefore good to worship the Sun – if not for any mystical qualities you might wish to attribute to it, then for this fact alone: that without the Sun, life on Earth would be impossible.

    But of course it did – and will continue to do so for many, many, many more years.

    Indeed, the Sun is at the midpoint of its life, being formed 4.6×109 years ago and set to continue shining for roughly the same span of time from the present before using up its reserves of hydrogen and turning into a white dwarf.

    When I saw this building near The Oval cricket ground in London just now, I thought it belonged to a society devoted to alien research and stuff.



    But it is nothing of that kind.

    The British Interplanetary Society … is the oldest space advocacy organisation in the world. Its aim is exclusively to support and promote astronautics and space exploration.
    —Wikipedia. So it is even older than NASA.
