    String quartets Empty String quartets

    Post  George Thu 23 May 2019, 13:02

A moment ago, there was Dmitri Shostakovich’s String Quartet № 4 in D major, Op. 83 (the Emerson String Quartet) in “Composer of the Week” with Donald McLeod.

So far this year, I have enjoyed listening to four Shostakovich quartets on BBC Radio 3, namely the above and the following three:

    • String Quartet № 2 in A major, Op. 68
    • String Quartet № 7 in F-sharp minor, Op. 108
    • String Quartet № 8 in C minor, Op. 110

I love collecting such works for my listening enjoyment. And I have ample time to do this now that I no longer have to profess Sartrean bad faith.

And there was Johannes Brahms’s String Quartet № 1 in C minor, Op. 51 № 1 (the Schumann Quartet – named not after the composer but after its founders, who have the same surname) in “Radio 3 Lunchtime Concert” with Kate Molleson.

    I love Brahms!

Indeed, I love the string quartet so much that I have trying to compose one of my own: a String Quartet in D-sharp minor! And, instead of the usual ensemble of two violins, viola & cello, my experimental work is for violin, viola, cello & double bass (like in Schubert’s “Trout” quintet).

Three Beethoven quartets were played by the Cuarteto Casals in “Through the Night” with Catriona Young: № 3 in D major, Op. 18 № 3; № 2 in G major, Op. 18 № 2; and № 7 in F major, Op. 59 № 1. I was too tired to stay up to listen to any of them.
